Megaformer Craze Hits China: High-Intensity Pilates Hybrid Gains Traction Among Urban Elites, Sparking Industry Debate

ING 2025-11-27

A high-intensity Pilates variant called the Megaformer, dubbed the “supermodel machine,” is reshaping China’s fitness landscape, with premium studios in Shanghai and Beijing reporting sold-out classes. Originating from U.S. brand Solidcore—acquired by LVMH’s L Catterton for $700 million in 2024—the Megaformer combines resistance training with low-impact cardio, targeting deep muscle engagement.

Domestic chains like The Megaformer Lab and The Body Lab now offer 50-minute group sessions priced at $120 (849 RMB) for five classes weekly, rivaling traditional Pilates rates. “It’s a step-up for advanced users,” said Shanghai-based trainer Akk, noting the machine’s heavier springs and dynamic routines. However, critics argue that core Pilates principles like mindful movement are compromised by the Megaformer’s emphasis on intensity.

Despite debates, the global Pilates equipment market is projected to grow at 6.6% CAGR through 2034, driven by hybrid models and eco-conscious designs. Chinese manufacturers like Yilian Health are responding with modular reformers using recycled materials, while studios prioritize AI-powered apps for personalized training plans. “The future lies in balancing innovation with inclusivity,” said industry analyst Li Wei.
